2025 is a very special year for us— It marks 30 years of cat rescue work in the Kenosha area.
What began as one woman’s heartfelt mission has grown into a vital part of our community. Our founder, Carolyn Newton, was deeply moved by the overwhelming number of homeless cats in need of love and safety. In 1995, she began working alongside Animal Lifeline in Kenosha, planting the seeds for something more. Then, in 2000, Kindred Kitties was born—with a dream to make a difference, one life at a time. This year we're proudly celebrating Kindred Kitties 25th birthday!!!
Like many grassroots efforts, our journey took time, dedication, and a whole lot of heart. Kindred Kitties became an official 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2005, laying the foundation for the organization we are today. And in 2012, when Carolyn was no longer able to continue with her efforts, Cathy McDowell and Jen Erjavac continued to move the organization forward with the same heart and determination that Carolyn had displayed. With their guidance—and the tireless support of many volunteers, fosters, adopters, and donors—we’ve rescued and rehomed over 12,000 cats and kittens. And we’re not slowing down anytime soon.
As we enter this new chapter, Kindred Kitties is transitioning to a collaborative, team-based leadership model, with a dedicated group of volunteers sharing responsibilities to build a strong, sustainable future. This approach reflects the spirit of our mission—working together to help cats and the people who love them.
At Kindred Kitties, we’re here to find homes for homeless kitties—whether it’s one gentle soul, a perfect pair, or a whole little family. Every adoption is a promise of love, and we are honored to be part of each cat’s journey home.
