So You Want To Adopt?

Please Think Before You Leap:      A Lifetime of Love Awaits

It happens to the best of us—you spot a tiger-striped kitten with white paws and big green eyes just begging for attention. Next thing you know, you're strolling down the pet aisle, daydreaming about your new furry friend.

Falling in love with a cat is easy. And no wonder—sharing your home with a companion animal can be one of life’s greatest joys. Cats give us love, loyalty, companionship, and even help melt away the stress of the day.

Adoption is a lifelong commitment, not a spontaneous decision. Cats require your time, money, and care—for 15 years or more. Pet ownership is rewarding, but only when it’s thoughtfully considered.

Important Questions to Ask Yourself

The fact that you're thinking about adopting from Kindred Kitties means you're a responsible and caring person. But before you open your heart and home, take a moment to reflect.
  • Why do you want a pet?  Is this a lifelong wish or a spur-of-the-moment decision? Pets are family members who may be with you for 10, 15, or even 20 years.
  • Do you have time for a pet?  Cats can’t be ignored when life gets busy. They need food, clean litter, playtime, medical care, and daily companionship.
  • Can you afford a pet?  Food, litter, toys, scratching posts, vet visits, and emergencies can add up. Be sure you're financially prepared.
  • Are you prepared to deal with special problems that a cat can cause? Scratched furniture, fur on your favorite chair, or middle-of-the-night zoomies—it’s all part of the package.
  • Can you have a pet where you live? Check your lease or HOA rules before adopting. Some places limit the number or type of pets allowed.
  • Is it a good time for you to adopt a pet?  If you’re juggling young children, frequent travel, or major life transitions, it might be best to wait. If you're a student, in the military, or travel frequently as part of your work, waiting until you settle down is wise.
  • Who will care for your pet when you're away? Have a plan for vacations, business trips, or emergencies—whether that means relying on a trusted friend or neighbor, or setting aside funds for a pet-sitting service.
  • Finally, are you prepared to keep and care for the cat for his or her entire lifetime? Adopting a cat means caring for them through every stage of their life, from playful kitten to wise senior.

Adopt for Life, Not Just for Now

A walk through any animal shelter shows why these questions matter. Many cats end up homeless because someone didn’t think things through. Kittens grow up, life changes, and sadly, some pets are left behind.

Don’t let that happen. Think before you adopt. Sharing your life with a cat can bring endless joy—but only if you’re ready to provide a lifetime of love, care, and commitment.
